Alcohol dependence and addiction

Prolonged heavy drinking can lead to serious health problems which include liver failure, heart disease, stroke, and various cancers. Alcohol consumption also causes severe impairment of motor abilities and judgment. In all, alcohol kills over 3 million people worldwide every year through a combination of accidents and disease.

Alcohol addiction is a common problem faced by millions of people worldwide. In the United States alone, about one in eight adults meets the criteria for alcoholism. Alcohol addiction can lead to neglecting personal responsibilities, participating in hazardous behaviours, legal problems, strained relationships, withdrawal symptoms, and spending significant amounts of time recovering from the effects of drinking.

Inpatient rehab in Thailand for alcohol addiction

Alcohol addiction is notoriously challenging to overcome – yet fortunately, help is available. Effective residential treatment programmes for alcohol addiction include detox, therapy, counselling, and support groups. For the highest likelihood of success, it’s best to join a comprehensive residential rehab programme that uses the right combination of evidence based treatments for your specific needs.

Our inpatient alcohol treatment involves living onsite at our rehab facility in Chiang Mai, where your environment is carefully regulated and your recovery is constantly monitored by our onsite medical professionals and addiction specialists. You will receive the utmost care and support for the duration of your stay, which usually lasts a minimum of 28 days.

Our alcohol rehab programmes are custom-designed by clinical professionals, who evaluate your current condition and personal preferences before putting together a tailored programme that addresses your particular needs. This personalised programme acts as your path towards sobriety, as we guide you forward throughout your stay and beyond.

Assessment and detox

Before you arrive, we will discuss your condition with you to determine whether you will need to undergo detox at our onsite alcohol detox clinic in Thailand. In the most serious cases, the detox is carried out at our partner hospital Chiang Mai Ram. Upon your arrival at Hesten Hill Rehab, you will undergo a full mental and physical assessment from our on-site doctor. After that, our psychiatrist will perform an additional mental health evaluation, to check for additional underlying issues that may need attention. If necessary, we will provide you with a detox plan, carefully monitoring your progress as we minimise the effects of alcohol withdrawal. Throughout the detox, you will receive regular doctor visits and 24-hour nursing.

Psychological therapy and trauma treatment

At Hesten Hill Rehab, we treat both the addiction itself and the underlying causes that led you to self-medicate with alcohol. We use dialectical behaviour therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy to show you how to identify harmful patterns of thinking that lead you to drink. Once you can identify these negative patterns of thought, we teach you how to redirect your thinking towards more positive patterns. Through trauma release exercises, as well as eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing, our therapists help you identify traumatic events from your past, and learn to ease the stress linked to your memories of those events.

The 12-step Minnesota model

The 12-step Minnesota model is well known through its association with Alcoholics Anonymous. This programme starts with admitting the negative effects that alcohol addiction has had on your life. From there, it helps you focus on abstaining from drinking, atoning for any harm you caused your loved ones when you were drinking, and working towards a brighter future. The original 12-step model was associated with the Christian faith, but at Hesten Hill Rehab Thailand, we take a secular approach to the programme so that it works equally well for people of all religious backgrounds.

Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness mediation is a popular secular meditation practice that involves learning to pay attention to thoughts and sensations. The act of witnessing your own sensations, accepting them, and letting them go, is an excellent way to reinforce the gains you make in therapy, as it provides you with yet another tool to more constructively deal with the negative thoughts that led to your drinking problems.

Relapse prevention and aftercare

The first few weeks after you return home are crucial to a lasting recovery. To that end, we will work with you to design a relapse prevention plan that will teach you to manage any cravings for alcohol that arise as you re-enter society. We also provide group and individual online counselling as part of our comprehensive aftercare programme.

Holistic elements

At Hesten Hill Rehab, we apply a holistic treatment approach to alcohol rehabilitation. We insist on treating every aspect of our clients in mind, body and spirit. To complement psychological therapies, we offer a wide range of additional therapies and activities including yoga, spa therapy, Thai massage, nutrition plans, Pilates classes, gym sessions with a personal trainer, aqua therapy, art therapy, Muay Thai training, and off-site excursions. These additional holistic elements work in conjunction with our core treatments to provide you with the foundations for a healthy and fulfilling future without alcohol.
